Launchpad is going open source

January14

Launchpad is an amazing project-hosting and bug-tracking service created by Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu. It provides a wonderful way for software developers to communicate, sharing translations, code, bug reports and fixes, and more. It is becoming more and more popular.

The service was developed in-house and has used closed-source code from the beginning, but there has always been a hint that this would eventually change. The announcement just came out that Launchpad’s source code will be opened this summer (2009), allowing users and developers to see how it works and participate in its development if they wish.

This is wonderful news and I applaud Canonical and Mark Shuttleworth for finding a way to do it. Thank you!
