Some users are expressing disappointment with Ubuntu 8.04 – Hardy Heron

One such user is my friend K.Mandla. His disappointment? It’s too easy to set up. 
Those of us who have been around since Hoary Hedgehog (Ubuntu 5.04) or earlier remember the work that was needed to get things up and running. Well, for the majority of people, those days are gone (and good riddance!).
Congrats again and huge thanks to all involved in making Hardy the best Ubuntu release so far, and perhaps the best Linux distro release ever!
It’s good for me but there’s a lot of complaints about lost sound & the mouse screwing up in games.
I’m liking Hardy very much. Seems quicker to me especially for USB transfers.
Still have problems with my DWL G122 D-Link ver C1 USB Wireless adapter and the drivers bundled with Hardy slowing down firefox and system performence to a crawl though. Have used the rt73-cvs-daily drivers which was a bit of a pain because the updates of the kernel meant that I had to reconfig it every time. Still it’s working fine and there seems to be no mysterious system lock-ups caused by the use of it which is great and could not be said for 7.10.
The only problem with using the rt73-cvs-daily drivers is that I have Firestarter installed and the two combined somehow manage to lock-up my system at boot time unless I unplug the adapter before boot. I’ve made a bug report so will see what comes of it.
Ubuntu does seem to be taking great strides in the right direction in regards to being user friendly and not hard to set up. I remember my first attempt with Ubuntu 5.04 which I got from a cover disk it all worked great other than (of course) graphics and network which took some head scratching but was resolved in the end with a bit of effort and a lot reading and help. I was struck by how different it was to Red Hat 5.1 and have stuck with it ever since.
I had only 2 problems since I upgraded but they are pretty annoying:
the first one is that under gnome files that are set to be opened using kaffeine don’t seem to start by clicking on them(I have to start kaffeine first then open the files),and the second one is under kde4 some keyboard shortcuts didn’t work(solved by deleting the $HOME/.kde4)

Have you tried right clicking on the files and selecting Kaffeine as the default player for these files? Might work.

yes I have tried that and also tried the open-with menu but it doesn’t work
maybe links don’t point where they should anymore(I guess)
HardyGood…. but… hurry up Google and get the Google Toolbar for Firefox 3 already! You got all my bookmarks in that toolbar!!

Because of the package fluxbuntu-default-settings, My upgrade on three machines was hellish, but after getting those issues resolved, the last thing I wanted to do was set things up.
After a long time downloading twice (I have two 32-bit desktops – one download, and apt-cache – and a one 64-bit laptop) and eight hours of aggravation I just wanted use my computers. Thank you for making Ubuntu so user-friendly!
The biggest bug i’ve suffered is that my intel wireless no longer works and the same is true for a lot of people. Sadly the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/185470 seems to be being negelected by any developers. Don’t suppose you wanna give it a go as it’s a bit of a show stopper for an LTS release.
My first into to Linux was Breezy. I loved it. Compared to Hardy, Breezy is like DOS (but better of course). Ubuntu is developing so fast it will be, if it isn’t already, better than anything else out there including win and osx (okay, they aren’t that hard to beat but you get the idea).
my problems with hardy:
- sound (pulseaudio) works erraticly (sometimes does, sometimes not)
- very slow (or rather, very unresponsive) compared to gutsy on a 3 year old laptop
- as a consequence, video playback is choppy using most players. and again, half the time it’s without sound. I can’t live without sound (well…).
- hopefully it gets better one day, but it’ll be too late for me, i’ve tried Archlinux and loved it. it’s got its share of problems with hardware but basic stuff like sound, video and firefox (including flash videos) work beautifully, better than under any other OS I’ve tried.
I just installed 8.04 and my D-LINK DWL-G122 C1 worked straight away! I can connect to my WPA wireless network.
I am using the default rt73 module supplied with 8.04 – I was not required to download the Ralink or Seamonkey open source code to get things working.
A question to Stacy Mader:
Since my 8.04 did not recognize D-Link DWG-G12 C1, how can I find out whether or not rt73 module is supplied by 8.04?
Better yet, how did you do it exactly?
