Apologies to my Planet Ubuntu friends
Sorry about the length of that last post. I thought using the “more” tag in WordPress would cause only the first couple of paragraphs to be carried by my rss feed, like it does on my blog front page…I didn’t expect the whole, long thing to end up on the Planet.
So, dear lazyweb, any idea how I can accomplish that goal for the next time? I certainly don’t want to overwhelm the Planet page or others.

Well, dunno, I personally really hate to click “read more†in an RSS feed
Hmm, I had exactly the same problem, just now, also using the tag. Any tips will be appreciated from my side too!
Henrik: I’m glad to know there is at least one person I haven’t bothered with this.
Thanks for the encouraging words.
I actually agree with you, but I don’t want people to be frustrated by all the gory details if they aren’t interested.
Hey there Matthew,
Under Settings –> Reading, click the “Summary” radio box under “For each article in a feed, show:”.
Cheers,
Og
Og: thank you! I’ve made the adjustment.
Most of my posts are short enough where this isn’t really an issue, but for stuff like this…
Matthew: The summary option will summarize all your posts in ur feeds. Even the ones for which u don’t use the more tag.
Actually WP 2.5 has modified how more tag works so that it doesn’t do anything in the feeds and they will always show up full.
I think there is some “better feed” plugin or something to restore the old functionality of more tag working in feeds as well.
Hmm. Okay. I’ll do some plugin searching and see what I come up with. If I find a solution that looks good, I’ll try it out.
Matthew, you did everything right. The more tag is supposed to work exactly like that.
You’ve most likely hit some sort of regression in WordPress 2.5. Check the WordPress Trac to see if it’s been reported before.
I love finding bugs. I’ll research it and report it if I don’t find anything listed.
And I already have a follow-up for you. This is a known issue, and was done intentionally.
I’m off to look for a plugin.
Well, bummer. I found this plugin that does exactly what WordPress 2.5 does with forcing the feed to ignore the more tag and either send out the full or the truncated text. Apparently, this action was added in 2.1 and had been making lots of people unhappy since.
I have not found a plugin to re-insert the behavior that was just removed.
Hello. Better Feed might help you. Haven’t actually tried it yet, though.
Thanks, donnie! I’ll look at that later today or tomorrow, when I get time. An initial browse of the plugin home page seemed promising.
I personnally don’t mind having a long post, they’re usually the most interesting ones and it doesn’t add clutter when you read it using something like google reader. It’s actually a lot faster than having to open up a different page and finding the point you had reached earlier in the text.
Cool. I’ve had some very helpful posts, seeking out a solution to what I perceived as a problem. Thanks for that!
I’ve also had a few people say that a long post isn’t really a problem, and no one say that it is a problem…either my apology took care of that up front, so no one felt the need to comment, or I was perceiving it to be a big deal when it really isn’t.
I’ll think about this and watch for a while before I make any real changes.
